The Government has decided to increase the subsidy for quality films from 125 to 200 from 2022-23. Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai announced this decision in his speech during the State Budget on Friday.

On Thursday, Horticulture Minister and senior producer Muniratna had announced during the inauguration of the Bangalore International Film Festival that the Chief Minister will be giving a big surprise to the Film industry on Friday during the budget session. Likewise, Bommai has announced an increase in the subsidy films.

The Government started giving subsidy in the 1960s to promote quality Kannada films. The number of films increased from 10 in 1960s to 100 a few years back. In 2016, the then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah increased the subsidy films to 125 with each film getting a subsidy of 10 lakhs from the Government.

This year the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and other film bodies requested the Government to increase the number of subsidy films from 125 to 175. However, the Government has granted subsidy to 200 films from this year onwards. The Government’s decision has been welcomed by the Kannada film industry, particularly the Kannada Film Producers Association.
